Living Democracy from the Ground Up
I have been attending the public non-public Enbridge hearings in Vancouver all week. These hearings could be democratic if everyone was permitted to see them live and if the panel actually had the power to say yes or no to the proposed pipeline, but they are just giving recommendations and the public has been kept out with heavy security. Our elected officials (economists and bankers) will make the final decision.
This video shows how these proposals used to be handled, with consultation and respect to those who live and work on the land.
Our government has changed the rules. Large industrial projects are now given the go ahead quickly involving little consultation with local residents or thought about environmental impacts. Is this democracy at work?
