all about supertankers

Supertankers are large ships used to carry oil.  The largest of these are the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) which can carry 3oo million litres and the Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) which can carry over 480 million litres.

VLCCs are more than 300 meters in length, (almost a quarter of a mile). They are as long as the world’s tallest buildings are high.     They’re also half a football field wide.

These large tankers contain almost eight times more oil than the Exxon Valdez spilled in 1989.

Supertankers servicing the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline could carry about three times as much the largest oil tankers currently visiting Vancouver.

    • and the people who operate these vessels were not even in attendance at the hearings regarding the Ocean and Coastline concerns Dec 12 in Prince Rupert. The Endbridge VP during an interview on CBC stated that if a Tanker sinks Endbridge is not responsible. Why bother conducting this particular hearing at all if those with primary disaster responsibilities are not even in attendance?
